The Tun Tavern®
Owned and Operated by a Marine
“It’s all about patriotism and everyone who served. This is the number one reason I’m doing this.”
- Monty Dahm, owner of the national trademark and proprietary rights to Tun Tavern
The Vision to Create the Tun Tavern®
More than 30 years ago, Marine Corps veteran Monty Dahm pursued his passion and vision to honor the United States Marine Corps. The leadership skills he gained in the Corps laid the foundation for his business vision, culminating in the launch of Tun Tavern® Brewing Company in 1994. Through the success of making beer that honored the history of the Tun Tavern® and the people who were part of its legend, Monty purchased the national trademark and proprietary rights to Tun Tavern® when he opened the first Tun Tavern® Brewery and Restaurant in 1998 in Atlantic City.

Expansion to the City of Philadelphia – Birthplace of the United States Marine Corps
Over the years, Tun Tavern® Brewery and Restaurant has welcomed active military, veterans, and families across the country for celebrations that pay tribute to the proud history of the Marines. Monty always held firm in his belief that a genuine tribute to the Marines belonged in the City of Philadelphia, the birthplace of the U.S. Marine Corps.
After spending years searching for a perfect location in Philadelphia’s historic district, Monty reached an agreement to purchase a restaurant at 207 Chestnut Street, located just a block away from the original Tun Tavern structure that burned down in 1781. Through a multiphase renovation, which Monty is self-funding, he will construct a replica of the historic tavern.
The New Tun Tavern®
It will be an older reproduction as close as Monty can model it from historical information. The new restaurant will offer Colonial fare and food and it will be themed for the Marine Corps, Masons, and Saint George’s Society. The multi-million-dollar renovation will add two additional stories and a new façade. The Tun Tavern® will feature a restaurant, banquet space, museum and area for merchandise.
“My main focus is sharing it with Marines and the veterans. It’s about patriotism and re-creating the history for our nation.” – Monty Dahm

Tribute to Marine Corps
The Tun Tavern® Brewery and Restaurant hosts a special Marine Corps birthday celebration every year on November 10. In 2013, Monty held a special ceremony for his late brother, William C. Dahm, a Marine veteran who died of cancer at age 54 that year. William’s uniform was unveiled to an audience of Marines where it still hangs on the wall of the restaurant.
William went to active duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan and received several war medals. He also worked for the Pentagon on classified civilian missions.
"He fought in the war in Iraq. He fought in the war in Afghanistan, and unfortunately, he lost the biggest war," Monty Dahm said. "This is my way to honor his life, for all of us to honor his life and his service to our country."
The Friends of Tun Tavern
A nonprofit will be formed and will be funded by sales from the new Tun Tavern® and aid veteran support services. Many prominent military veterans and supporters of the Marine Corps will serve on the board. View the Founding Members.
